Here is the entrepreneurial mantra:  Tackle the challenges of today, plan for the gifts of tomorrow, understand the lesson of yesterday.

There are four pillars required to build a foundation that can succeed today and in the future.  Within each of these pillars (leadership, administration, operations and marketing) there lie critical considerations. EACH of these areas should be mapped out to set you up for lifelong success! We are here to provide that outline. Continue reading

‘Tis the Season for the Elevator Speech

‘Tis the season for holiday office parties, pot lucks with friends and festive family gatherings. As nature-preneurs it is also the time for the question that is dreaded by some and embraced by others, the inquisitive, “So.. what do you do?”.

The elevator speech is, in my opinion, nothing more than an opportunity for someone to quickly come up to our level of understanding. Our goal is for them to, in 60s or less, know what we do, why we do it, how it impacts people and who it impacts. This speech is a key to business growth and can be used throughout your interactions to grow your business and the understanding of the profession on whole. Continue reading

Go digital in the New Year

crowd of peopleNow is the time of year that we should be preparing our patients for not only the holiday season (and realistically their ‘slip ups’) but also to prepare them for the New Year and the launch of your digital presence.

It may seem like everyone is going digital these days and as much as it can be tempting to want to go against the trends, this one is not something that is going away anytime soon. Unlike last season’s brightly coloured romper, social media dominates the systems through which NDs can expand their business and leverage their time. Continue reading

Are you planning for YOU in your business? Start NOW

Paying yourselfI am constantly amazed on how business owners prioritize themselves in importance to their business. Often I have heard them say, after everything is paid, I will  take whatever is left over.  It seems even though when we start a business we place ourselves at the top but when we are running the business we move ourselves down to the bottom.   I understand the importance of sacrifice, but for how long?  I recall meeting a client whom had worked for 4 years in their business, much of that time without time outs and without pay.  The owners continually were sacrificing themselves for their business.  Sadly it led them to bankruptcy and divorce.  The lesson to learn in this area is to clearly make yourself part of the business picture.  Hello, entrepreneurs and owners around the world.  YOU NEED TO BE TAKEN CARE OF TOO.  Continue reading

Self-doubt in Private Practice

self doubt

It is likely many of us are overachievers. The fact that we’ve surpassed barriers to venture into professional private practice suggests this might be true. For whatever reason, be it a critical childhood, perfectionistic or unrelenting parenting, overcoming adverse life experiences, there are many ways of becoming an overachiever. Our Western society often promotes this type of work ethic (literally and figuratively), which doesn’t help. But a compulsive need to seek constant successes, acknowledgement, and compensation suggests that, regardless of how one became an overachiever, there’s likely a psychological underpinning involving some sense of feeling incomplete, inadequate, anxious, or uncomfortable with oneself. In most cases, it’s overcompensation for something we feel lacking. Continue reading

Do I need a web designer?

Web design“So should I get my website professionally designed? Or can I do it on my own?”
I get this question all of the time from new grads and doctors looking to upgrade. It is a hard question to answer without more information but a recent conversation with Dean from Pinwheel Design offered great insight on this topic. Continue reading

The Millionaire Mindset

Money

When you hear someone say “Millionaire” what do you think of? My poll of people has thoughts ranging from greed and deception, to jealousy, to hard work and success.

My opinion lies very much with the latter, especially with respect to the healthcare community. I think it is critical to remember in our sector that success is not to be scorned! For with success can come wisdom, sharing and altruism. Continue reading

Building out a business… (Are you watching for the cells or tumours?)

HEROs businessIn management we speak of a business as a holistic entity made up of many parts.  Meaning, a business has many departments.  A business has four major components:   Operations, Marketing, Administration, Leadership.  Each of these make up the whole of a business.  It is been my experience, that whenever a problem occurs it rarely stems from all aspects of the business, it usually in one of the areas, and often further within an area.

The understanding with this issue is we should never become complacent with our business.  It is not enough just to run a business, it is imperative that we manage it, watch over it, and keep looking for cancer cells rather than cancer tumours.  Becoming an effective manager of a business means continually studying the various components.
